Your day by day program
Trip starts at your guesthouse in Sibiu in the evening, where the bikes are waiting for you. Sibiu is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Romania. This is certainly the reason why Sibiu was chosen « the cultural capital of Europe in 2007 ». Developed by Saxons on a Roman village, Sibiu was the residence of the Austrian government in Transylvania. The small streets, the picturesque courtyards and the rock stairs create a romantic atmosphere. Lots of monuments and interesting museums are also waiting for you. Accommodation in a central hotel.
We leave this morning Sibiu. First stop on the way – Cisnadioara, a Romanesque basilica from the 12th century, surrounded by 6 meters high walls. Though its construction is rather simply, it’s location on the top of the hill offers a splendid view on Sibiu Valley. We continue our ride and we will have a short stop in Avrig. All of the sudden we will be surprised here by an unique baroque ensemble, Brukenthal Palace, historic manor right at the foot of the Transylvanian Carpathians. This baroque estate was built in the end of the 18th century and its little paradise garden will enchant us on a hot summer day. We will end up the day by a steady 3km climb. This effort will be lavishly rewarded by the wonderful landscapes and tranquil villages where life flows at a very slow pace. Nucet, a remote village will host you for the night, with a cosy and welcoming guesthouse where you can enjoy their ecological food. (~60 km, +500 / -450)
After breakfast you set up the bikes and start your ride through the villages of Transylvania. By the half of our ride we’ll feel already far away from the civilisation and we will have lovely stretch of flat road with an amazing view of the country side and traditional villages. Then the road becomes even narrower and wider and the last climb will be through beautiful fields and villages. The small village of Richis will be a good opportunity to discover more local people: the oldest man of the Saxon community has the keys of the church and if you speak German he can tell you the most delicious stories od the village. We finish the ride with 10 km downhill till Biertan, town sheltering an enormous fortified church, the essence of the Saxon heritage of Transylvania. The ecclesiastic and defense complex was built in 15th-16th centuries in the late Gothic style, with specific Renaissance elements and for 300 years was chosen as the residence of the Evangelic Diocese. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dinner and accommodation in Biertan village. (~55 km)
This cycling day will allow you to discover other treasures from Transylvania. You move on to Sighisoara, one of the few medieval citadels in Europe that is still fully inhabited and also included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. Discover the old town with its famous clock tower, which initially served as the main entrance to the citadel, but also covered stairs, medieval streets, the house where Vlad Dracul, the father of Vlad the Impeller known by Bram Stocker’s legend as Dracula, was born. On the road you can make a small detour to Dumbraveni, another town with an important Armenian Catholic Church, another witness of our glorious past. Trip comes to an end in the evening. (~40 km)
