Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Moldova is the region of Bucovina, home to one of the world's greatest art treasures: the UNESCO World heritage sites of the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. Immersed in the Romanian counties you will discover a rural world which disappeared long ago in western countries. Bucovina will seduce you with its famous painted monasteries, with its rich culture (hailing from almost all the ethnic groups of Central Europe), with the crafts, with the field works in its hilly landscape and other wonders.
You're skilled local guide will keep you permanently in contact with the rich peasant culture and the protected nature while enjoying some wonderful trails across the cool forests & hills.
Your day by day program
Arrival in Bucovina in the evening, in a small village right in the heart of the region. Your hosts will welcome you with a delicious homemade dinner with typical dishes. You\'ll spend the night in a cozy guesthouse.
In the morning we’ll have a short transfer along the River Moldovita, to the starting point of our hike. This immersion in a peasant world will enchant you; the beautiful landscape punctuated with sheep herds and horse-carts reveals a great harmony. The quietness of the forests is mixing with the fresh air and wild forests, making for a perfect setting.
Night at the same place (~4 hours, 13 km, +/-300m).
After the breakfast, be ready to discover the deep Bucovina. After a short climb we arrive in the forest and from there, according to the moving of the flocks and time of the year, we could reach a shepherd’s hut. We continue through the famous fir-tree forest of Bucovina until we go back to the valley to discover one of the major components of the unique Bucovina monasteries set, the Moldoviţa painted monastery. From there, depending on how we feel we go back to the guesthouse either on foot (5km) through the village, either with a local bus. Once back at the guesthouse, our hosts will make us discover their ancient art: eggs painting with natural dyes and resins.
Night in Moldoviţa. (~4 hours, +500m, -550)
On the last full day in Bucovina, we\'ll take a tour of some of the most famous monasteries, some part of the UNESCO heritage. We\'ll visit Sucevita & Voronet monasteries, both painted on the outside and part of the World heritage, both with its specifics and amazing history. We can also pay a visit to Putna monastery, different from the other because although it does not bear outside frescoes, it is very important because one of the greatest Medieval rulers is buried there: Stephen the Great. One last for the day can be Cacica salt mine, one of the oldest miens in the country, with winding galleries & interesting stories.
After such a full day of learning about Bucovina\'s culture, we get back to our hosts for one last night.
After the breakfast your trip comes to an end. But you can always spend more time discovering this beautiful region or other nearby.
