A spectacular Bike Tour in Serbia and Romania on the Danube trail from Belgrade to Bucharest, following the EuroVelo 6!
This trip from Belgrade to Bucharest will introduce you to some absolutely amazing scenery. We will follow the most spectacular section of the Danube which is part of the project EuroVelo6. We will start our ride in Serbia and finish it in Romania, right at the end of the Carpathian Mountains, crossing the Banat region. Here we will find breath-taking combinations of landscapes, from nice hills onto which picturesque villages with secular traditions like haymaking are settled, to steep gorge walls where lively rivers flow. The great Danube which will give you the feeling of pushing the mountains so it can slowly float towards the Black Sea, between Serbia and Romania, between the Balkans and the Carpathian Mountains.
Please check the entry conditions in both countries, Serbia and Romania.
Your day by day program
The trip starts in the evening at your hotel in the centre of Belgrade, where your bikes will be waiting for you. You can choose an extra night to visit the city.
Today, we begin the descent on the Danube which is the second longest river in Europe and was formerly used as a natural border of the Roman Empire. Today's journey will be finished near Kovin. While crossing Kovin, we will be able to admire the beautiful and traditional Austro-Hungarian architecture. We are going to sleep on the banks of the Danube, in a small and charming bed and breakfast. ~ 73 km, without elevation gain. Breakfast and dinner included.
Today, we cycle on the Serbian side, admiring the majestic river which has already travelled to several countries before arriving to where we are. Our surprise for the day will involve a very special place where we will enjoy our packed lunch. On our most beautiful sight of the day list, we will experience the powerful Danube digging its way into the Carpathians. As we will be entering the mountains today, a most peaceful view of the stunning Danube flowing serenely towards the Black Sea will accompany us. As the final treat for today, we will spend the evening in a small holiday village where there are natural lakes available, so we will take on the best way to finish the day, by having a much deserved refreshing swimming session. ~ 50 km, without difference in level. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included.
Today's stage will have us cross the passage between Serbia and Romania. We will, therefore, move away from the Danube to pass through customs and this will give us the opportunity to discover the stunning countryside. By the end of the day, we will arrive at our first hostel in Romania, on the banks of the Danube. Here we will have plenty of options to have fun, be it swimming, having a boat trip or simply admiring the most beautiful Danubian sunset from ! ~ 45 km, with several small climbs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Today's ride starts from the Romanian region called Banat. Under the Austro-Hungarian Empire Banat used to be the most cosmopolitan region in Romania. Even nowadays, Romanian, German, Hungarian, Serbian and Czech people still live in complete harmony here. Although at the beginning of our trip the Danube seemed tumultuous, here it becomes rather relaxed. It is because, in 1970, the Romanian and Serbian governments united forces and built here a dam with the purpose of increasing electricity production. They named it the Iron Gates and it is located downstream from the Danube Gorge. By the end of the day, we will also see it as we will be cycling along the reservoir created by the dam. ~55 km. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included.
Today's ride will offer us the greatest variety of landscapes, all packed with wonderful stories! In the beginning of the day we will cycle by a large but calm river, we will then cross all sorts of small towns and markets, we will see the industrial heritage of the communist period, and finally, we will end today's adventure close to the place where the Danube reaches the tightest point between Romania and Serbia. This is where we will admire the best sights. Today will be filled with wonderful panoramas, not only when we cross the beautiful gorges but also on the soft, rolling hills. Dinner and accommodation in a lovely guesthouse from a small but traditional village. ~ 50 km. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included.
Due to the current infrastructure, we will not be able to cycle on the Danube's narrowest portion, however, instead, we will discover it by boat and on foot. First of all, we will embark on a little boat and reach a cave which served for a refuge to the Austro-Hungarian army. Then, we will go on to visit a second cave, but the best part of today's trip will be coming after a little hike (1h30) when we will arrive at the most panoramic point, just above the gorges. For the last part of the day, we will once again jump on our bikes and explore the incredible monuments (such as gigantic statues in the rock or Roman inscriptions) found nearby. ~ 30 km. Breakfast and packed lunch included. Dinner not included.
Today, we leave the Danube and our bicycles behind and depart towards Bucharest. We will reach Bucharest by the middle of the afternoon and this is when our adventure together will end. You also have the option to extend your stay in Bucharest and discover this eclectic city where the architecture of many different periods as well as the lively social and cultural life will hypnotise you. We will give you all of the information necessary for a successful and enjoyable tour of Bucharest. Breakfast included.
