MTB tour in Carpathian villages - self-guided

6 days / 5 nights
Transylvania - Walachia - Mountain biking

price from 395 €

This journey will take you to one of the most picturesque and charming areas of the Carpathian Mountains, where the presence of human settlements has not disturbed the original landscape and ecosystems. You will ride in a triangle of three different massifs. The massive of King`s Stone is the longest limestone mountain range of Romania. The massive of Bucegi is the most spectacular mountain in the Meridional Carpathians and the forests of Postavaru hosts some of the best MTB trails in Romania. These massifs are a paradise for the wild fauna and flora. The plenitude of nature and its vitality have allowed here the survival of animals and plants that disappeared in other parts of Europe. You’ll also encounter scattered delightful villages with a patriarchal atmosphere that will provide a surprising contrast to the wilderness of the mountains. The courses will descent at the end of the days to let you find rustic welcoming accommodation places, and high interest medieval artifacts like Dracula`s Castle or The Old Town of Brasov.

Your day by day program

Trip start in Bucharest

The trip starts in Bucharest. If you arrive early enough, you could visit the old center of Bucharest. Transfer by train to Zarnesti.

Warm-up day around scattered villages

First ride of our circuit will introduce us to King`s Stone mountains natural park. Agreeable forestry roads among time forgotten woods, lands and pastures are a perfect warm-up. Views over the 2000m+ crests of King`s Stone and Bucegi mountains thrills the eye of the rider and the uphill quickly pass to make space for the enjoyable downhills. We are reaching the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, only to continue the loop back through birches, oaks and beeches. A final uphill brings us to our overnight village, up to 1000m altitude.

From one settlement to another

A spectacular day expects us, as today we continue the ride at the feet of the Piatra Craiului Mountains in Transylvania to get across in Wallachia and Bucegi mountains area. This bucolic landscape in the middle of pastures, sheepfolds and woods combines today with shadowed canyons. At the exit of Dambovicioara gorges there is a cave which can consist in an interesting cooling break especially on a warm day. Later on stepping into Bucegi area you will see surprising landscapes and the pleasant paths will lead you to your next overnight place. Night in a village at the foot of Bucegi Mountains.

Bran Castle

With more than double descent than ascent in today`s course, this will not be a demanding day. Before leaving Bucegi mountains area we visit the famous Dracula`s Castle in Bran. This castle, built in the 14th century, always had a role of defense against the migratory peoples. Later it protected Transylvania from the Ottoman invasions, and even later became a summer residence for the royal family of Romania. The castle is also associated with the prince Vlad the Impaler. Born in Transylvania, he is at the origin of the fictional character of Dracula.
Wavy forestry roads long-wise mountain rivers will predominate after the castle and we reach our overnight destination at the foot of another impressive medieval building, the stronghold of Rasnov.

Postavaru Mountains

On our last ride we can get to Postavaru peak on tracks or cable car. Our effort will be rewarded by beautiful single-tracks in the middle high-altitude meadows and forests that will lead us to the old center of the city of Brasov. An amazing way to immerse ourselves directly “down-town” to the most visited city of Romania.
